Thanks to Karyn Erkfritz-Gay for sharing this NeoOffice tidbit...

If you are using NeoOffice and want to make the "microsoft compatibility" as the default (so you don't have to remember to change it every time)

Click on Neooffice, go to preferences
Click on arrow next to "Load/Save"
Go to general
At the bottom, you will see "document type"
  on the left, you will see the document type
  -For text document.... change the "always save as" to Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP
  -For Spreadsheet.... change the "always save as" to Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP
  -For Presentation.... change the "always save as" to Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP
You don't have to save these changes after you switch them each time, but make sure you hit "ok" at the bottom when you are done.
